G-3 was fortunate enough to have a visit from Bob Aellis from the Odessa Fire Company. Bob is the grandfather of our very own Isabella Sarro. Bob came in and talked to the students about the importance of working fire alarms, why firefighters wear the clothes that they do when fighting fires, and even that a fire helmet is actually called a "lid"! Bob also taught the children what to do if their clothes are ever on fire - "stop, drop, cover, and roll", and what to do if they hear a smoke alarm going off - scream and yell for everyone to wake up, and then get out! But most importantly, Bob was able to dress up and show the children what he looks like in his gear, so in case there is ever a fire in their house, they will not be afraid of a firefighter who is coming to rescue them.
Bob was even kind enough to pass around some of his gear, including his helmet (lid), hood, and mask. Pictured to the left is Isabella demonstrating how a firefighter would wear the mask on their face! Lastly, Firefighter Bob was kind enough to send the children home with a lot of great fire safety goodies. They learned so much from Firefighter Bob and we are looking forward to seeing him again in the Spring when he can bring his firetruck back for the children to look at! Please feel free to use this as an opportunity to discuss Fire Safety with your family - including checking the batteries in your fire alarms, creating a family safety plan for getting out of the house / a special meeting place to go outside in case of a fire, and for the children to practice learning the emergency number (9-1-1) and saying their full name and address.
